About this business: The Georgian Bay Symphony was founded in 1972 by a small group of dedicated area musicians. Since then the GBS has grown to an outstanding community orchestra with over 60 volunteer members and a core group of professionals under the musical direction of John Barnum. The GBS performs five “Main Series” concerts in the OSCVI Regional Auditorium each season as well as three “Music in the Afternoon” concerts in smaller venues. Several of these concerts feature some of Canada’s best musical talent. Our main concerts are supported by over 450 season subscribers with average attendance of over 650 patrons.
Our Youth Orchestra consists of 40 young people ranging in age from 8 to 18 and they perform one main concert a year. Along with the Youth Orchestra GBS encourages talented young people with a bursary and scholarship program supported in part by our subscribers.
The Symphony also has a Composer-in-Residence program, partially funded by the Canada Council, to encourage the production of Canadian music and assist with education in area schools and with our audience.
It is our mission to bring the best of classical music to Grey and Bruce for all to enjoy.
